The supreme court unanimously ruled today that P2P file sharing software companies can be sued for enabling users to infringe on copyright laws. Crazy. A meaningless decision, there will always be a way to digitally share mp3 and aac files under the radar. But the important tid bit here is that the behemoth recording industry has yet to offer consumers a viable way to listen to and purchase music from their PCs. Apple and iTunes is still the only game in town. This also speaks to the lack of quality in the product that record labels would like us to pay for. We are not compelled to pay for a better sounding, well packaged physical product. Nor are we compelled to pay for a high quality, easy to use digital download. The RIAA thought that cassette recorders would be the death of the LP and Cassette sales, but people still bought the better sounding, well packaged product. Amazing. Also, Kool cigarettes is sponsoring a tour of conciousness hip hop artists. Why are these shows not free? Why are we paying to see Common perform under a huge green Kool cigarette banner (why an artist like Common is on a tour with such sponsorship is another story). This is gross. As consumers we need to realize that we are buying what they are selling like cattle lead to the slaughter house. Maybe a heavy analogy, but an apt one. Cable television, an expensive service, is inundating us with ads that companies are paying networks to play. Gross.

Cut a song with Search Party yesterday at Sonic Orchard. The room sounds good. They were very happy with the results. I’ll be going back in a tweaking some more, but it sounded good overall. Had to work around some of the limits imposed by the unfinished wiring situation, but the 8 channels we had set up worked out. Congratulations to my Mom and Dad who were two thirds of the second place team in the Chesapeake Bay Navitation Tournament. They were on a friends 38’ boat while navigating a series of points across the bay. Awesome.

Bam. Had my Flying Wings UFO Kite fixed up by Jon @ Sky Burner. Much quieter now. Things are starting to move at Sonic Orchard. Buying couches today and cutting a band on Sunday in the B room. Looking forward to that. Been back in my studio and will have two new tracks up here very soon. I’d like to thank all the recent mailing list entrants I’ve gotten. I’ll be sending out an email when the new music is up and playing. Whoa…

My folks are in town this week. We’re having a blast. Seeing the sites, enjoying the tricky Michigan weather. This week I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jon Trennepohl of Sky Burner kites. Jon also designed the Addiction by Premier, a kite currently in my bag. I had the chance to see the Sky Burner Delta Drive up close. Wow what a kite. Beautiful. Big. Tricky. I’ll be adding one to my bag asap. In the mean time I may have his company repair my Flying Wings UFO, Prism Nexus (bridle torn on Belle Isle in Detroit in a sudden gust) and re-frame my Addiction with SkyShark tubes. Things are still rolling up at Sonic Orchard. We have a tenative opening date in August, but will have to firm that up in the coming week.

Golf is a game of quiet, personal, victories. I had another great session at the driving range. I’m really getting a hold on my driver(Adams Redline). But it’s not my game that made me smile for a moment this morning. After my session, while sitting in the shade re-charging, I watched an older gentleman, 70 or so. He was dressed like I was, cargos, golf shirt, sunglasses. He had older equiptment, 90s TaylorMade Irons. He had a “bad” swing, elbows all over the place. But he was hitting the ball straight, 125 yards, consistently. With each hit he would look out at the ball and smile. Almost laughing a bit to himself. Somehow he was making good contact and getting his clubs to sound real good. Great game of love and hate, golf is. Looking forward to my parents visit this week.

I got a comment from someone listening to my music. They asked about Spyro Gyra. Spyro Gyra is/was a fusion jazz ensemble. My family listened to their records from the 80s. Somewhat funky. Very distinct. Sounds like the tracks I was working on with Biggup and Elijah are making their way to vinyl. Which is nice. I was back in the studio this week toying with some new ideas. It was nice to take a few weeks off from my music. I’m back at it. I need a new chair though. My Ikea just isn’t cutting it. I’ll be shopping around for a Steelcase or Herman Miller. Yum. Had the chance to work with Tighe, an assistant up at Sonic Orchard. Good guy. Hip-Hop producer. Seems to have his eyes on the prize. No golf this week. A little kite flying. I was dissappointed with the Dutch and French results on the EU constitution. It’ll take a little longer, but I hope unity is inevitable. The more people can come together, especially at the multi-national level, the better. Small steps toward one world.
