Finished up with Shotgun Logic yesterday. 6 tunes in two days. Sounds real good. Open, aggressive, crunchy. Really enjoyed working with those guys. Hope to do so again. The studio held up really well. A few minor issues, but the sound is there. Check out some new photos in my photo log mess. Keeping the rock on. Oh yeah, check out my student Chris’ new BC Rich guitar. Oh la la. Bich’s Back model.

Working with Shotgun Logic @ Sonic Orchard this weekend. Very tight metal band. Two vocalists, which is nice. Metal with a dash of harmony is a good thing. The Studio sounds real good. All the gear is up and running, 2” performing well, Trident sounds wonderful. Thick and full of life. Yummy.

Had a good session yesterday with Steve Chucks from Unite 2 Write. Talented MC and label head. After the session, this is good news, Brian, Eric and I finally turned on all the gear at Sonic Orchard. The Trident and Studer powered up and functioned normally. Whew! So the B room is fully operational. The A room is going to be tested today. Good things. In other news….well I’ll get to the other news later.

Voivod was one of the most influential bands for me growing up. They had a totally new take on heavy music that included futurism, characters, and amazing musicianship. I dug out there ‘Nothingface’ record yesterday. Amazing album. Turns out that Jason Newsted, formerly of Metallica, is now playing bass. They cut a record that was released in 2003. Hope it rocks. Amazing. I remember: must have been 12 or 13 years old shopping at the local Listening Booth record store. Met a guy with a Voivod tattoo. I remember being blown away by such an obscure band having more than one fan in a small town in the Pocono Mountains. I also remember Voivod T-shirts being worn at the Anthrax/Public Enemy concert I attended, with my very cool parents, around that same time. For all the kids listening to metal these days, checking out Voivod, Faith No More, Death, Iron Maiden, Prong, and others is an interesting return to your roots.

Alexander Lucius Twilight was the first black college graduate. 1823. Kudos to a student of mine for seeking that out. Heard George Gilder referencing Ray Kurzweil on NPR this evening. Whoa. Scary. Gilder talking about divine ‘information’, Kurzweil talking about digital immortality and the broadasting of intelligence. My first guitar teacher, Bob Shick, was big on digital immortality. Bob’s one of those people I’d like to have over for dinner, along with Jesus,Mikel Prester,Abraham Lincoln, Hermes, and a few others. If there’s information embedded by intelligent design, how did it get there? Is it more probable that it was put there by a universal power, or got there by building on natural selection? Scary to think that creationism is almost a subject in public schools. To quote Richard Dawkins, biologist @ Oxford, “We have wing-nuts that want to teach creationism here in the UK, but we don’t elect them to public office.” I hope to run into Skip Drinkwater in a cafe in Paris some day and talk to him about all this.

Had the pleasure of working with Mario Winans this week at his production facility. Great sounding room. Lots o’ synths. Lots. SSL 4000E and an older ProTools system. Enjoyed. Dennis from Q Cables is out at Sonic Orchard this week getting the wiring in. Looks great so far. There’s so much to be said for elegant wiring that’s done right and completely the first time. Speaking of which, it always suprises me when studios don’t label there I/O in ProTools. Why not label it SSL 15 instead of needing a chart, SSL 15 to 888 3.5 etc. It’s another reason I’m glad to be a part of setting up Sonic Orchard. That room is going to be dead easy to use. Falling off a log easy. It’s just nice not to need an assistant or notes when working in a room. Ahhhh. Oh yes, new music on the music page.
