I had new tires put on my car today. While waiting at the Firestone store a woman struck up a conversation about the rolling stones. The most interesting part of our conversation (which wasn’t really a conversation, she did a lot of talking) was the fact that she identified a starving up and coming rock star/artist as someone who ate crackers and cheese and lived in a bad apartment. She said this a few times. “crackers cheese and bad apartments”. She was in her 60’s and identified the artist as someone who would suffer through crackers cheese and bad apartments. Spent the evening with Ann and Aaron Hedley and the Cranbrook painting department. Really enjoyed. I added a photo of me with Bradley Rhodes to my album. Hope to cut a record with him soon. He appreciates the beauty of Boone, NC and pronounces Appalacian properly. Our children will watch movies set in the 90s and early 00s. What will those art directors make cool? What will they glamorize?

I Did a lot of singing yesterday. Listening back, I really sound like my grandfather, Victor. Uploaded a new Kurzweil patch. It’s a synth I created for my new song “Yourself, away”, which I’ll be uploading soon. Attended a rehearsal of Elliott Earls‘ band, which I’ll be doing some recording/listening with. It’s a very cool appalachian/Faulkner/Waits/mooon shine sounding group of songs. We’re recording in Christ’s Church Cranbrook, which is a magnificent acoustic space. I’ll keep you posted. Another thought: the work the audio field is doing in surround sound will never be accepted by the mainstream. More thinking should be done on maximizing the headphone experience (SRS and the like). DVD audio and DSD in surround will be as popular as DAT and DCC were. The surround stuff will have its application however; in immersive experiences. I recall touring a science institute in Seattle where they had a virtual reality workstation running a hang gliding program. I put on the head gear (goggles and phones) and picked up the large controller. But instead of ‘running’ off the top of the virtual building to begin gliding to the ground below, I looked around. Turning my head and turining the environment with me. The attendant said, “no one ever just looks around, every one just looks straight and goes straight”. Looking around.

The big news today is Apple‘s new operating system ‘Tiger’ on my laptop. Oh my. The Dashboard application is amazing. I’m pleased to say that I’ll not be loading any Microsoft products. I’ll be using iWork, Apple’s WP and Presentation software, instead. And it looks like their PIM software has come of age so good bye Entourage. The new system runs like a dream on my trusty old iBook (500Mhz G3, 576MB RAM). Good things. Also, check out Nintendo‘s new controller for the upsoming Revolution system. It’s a one handed remote that reacts to it’s movements through the air. Incredible.

We scored a 9 over 79 yesterday @ Liberty golf club in Clarkston, MI. the Metro Times of Detroit held a very nice event. Good food. Good golf. It was sponsored by a local chain of Adult novelty stores which made for some interesting raffle prizes. I’m in my studio this week continuing with the guitar projects.

Watch out Detroit. Sonic Orchard is going to reprazent at the Metro Times Golf Tournament next week. Fore!! It’ll be fun. In my studio with the Kyma this week. Still churning out great sounds. Setting it up to follow and accompany acoustic guitar things. Going to attack Jessie Sparhawk‘s record with it soon. I’m hearing a lot of pulling and pushing. Heard from Jenn Stang this week. She’s putting her project on hold and going to Spain to study Flamenco dance for a while. Best of luck to her. Chrissy (my awesome wife) is getting her website together this week. Looks cool so far. Stay tuned for a link. Finished reading Infinite Jest for the 3rd time. That book just keeps getting better and better. Laughing and crying. I passed it on to Aaron Hedley (He and his wife Anne Schaeffer just moved out here to Detroit from Philly so Anne can attend Cranbrook). Never had anyone I’ve given the book to actually get all the way through it. The footnotes have footnotes.
